On 25th July in 1978, Louise Joy Brown , the world’s first test tube baby was conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF). And a healthy baby was delivered by Lesley Brown. Today, IVF is considered a mainstream medical treatment for infertility. Hundreds and thousands of children around the world have been conceived through this procedure.

In vitro fertilization ( IVF ) is a process of fertilizing a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory. In vitro fertilization means fertilization that happens outside the body. After 3 to 5 days of the fertilization in the laboratory, the fertilized embryo is placed into a woman’s womb. If the embryo sticks to implants in the lining of the womb and grows, it will result into pregnancy. Unused embryos can be frozen which can be implanted or donated later.

Woman who undergo IVF must take daily pills of hormone progesterone for at least 8 to 10 weeks after the embryo transplant. These pills will help to produce the progesterone hormone naturally which will help in thickening the lining of the womb. This will eventually make easier for embryo to implant. And it will minimize the risk of miscarriage. IVF is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) which means that a special medical techniques are used to support a woman to conceive a child.
